As information about scholarships is provided to United Township High School, it will be posted here, in the Counseling office, and in the English 4 classrooms.  Deadlines occur throughout the year, so check the opportunities often.    New listings are first, followed by the complete list according to deadlines.

Rock Island County

The scholarship has been extended until June 1, due to lack of responses.  Two four-year renewable $1000 scholarships are being offered to applicants who will attend Black Hawk College or Western Illinois University with plans to major in public administration, government or social studies.  Application is in counseling drawer.  Due:  June 1  (4-25)

·        University of WisconsinMilwaukee  - new full-ride scholarships available.  See Mrs. Holdsworth for info.

 

·        University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign – Tau Kappa Epsilon  invite incoming freshman men to learn and explore the fraternity system.  Two awards:  $1000 and $500 will be given.  Application in counseling...se Mrs. Holdsworth.

 

·        University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign  - males interested in the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity “Balanced Man” scholarship should see Mrs. Holdsworth. 

 

·        University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign – Quad Cities Illini Club will award two $1,000 scholarships this year.  One will be awarded to a student planning to pursue a degree in a health-related field of study.  Deadline is May 15.  Applications are in the Counseling Scholarship drawer.

 

·        Black Hawk College -  The BHC Foundation offers a number of scholarship opportunities.  Flyers describing each scholarship and the application forms are in the Counseling Scholarship drawer.  MAY 15 Deadline

Skip-A-Long Child Development Services:  Virgie Wells Scholarship

Applicants must be planning to attend college or university full time.  “We are looking for the all around good student.”  Applicants are not limited to any specific field of study.   Applications are in the counseling office.  Due May 5.  (2-11)

The Links, Inc

Seniors with a 2.5 GPA or higher who are of African American Heritage may apply for a $500 scholarship from the Quad Cities Chapter of the Links, Inc.  Materials must be postmarked by May 9.  Applications are available in the Counseling drawer.  (4-4)

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority

Applicant must be a female of African descent with a minimum 2.75 GPA.  A short biographical statement including educational and careers must be included.  Proof of acceptance at a four year degree granting institution must be included. No amount was listed.  Application is in scholarship drawer.  Deadline is May 15.                                               (3-4)

Excellence in Agriculture

Ten students will be honored with $2,500 scholarships.  Applicants must plan to pursu a career in agriculture at two-year or four-year colleges.  Applications are due May 15.  Applications are in the Counseling Drawer.                     (4-4)

NSPE (National Society of Professional Engineers)

A $1000 scholarship is being offered to a student who enrolls in any ABET accredited engineering college or university, by  the local Professional Engineers Association.  Applications are in the counseling drawer.  They are due May 16.    (3-12)

Morrie Unterschiendt Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded if there are profits from the memorial golf tournament sponsored in May to honor the son of Morrie Unterschiendt.  In the past two students from UTHS have received scholarships of $500 each.  Applicant must have a 2.5 GPA.  Preference is given to students in financial need.

Harold Cheek Scholarship

This $500 award will go to an applicant with a 2.75 GPA or higher.  A transcript, resume with activities and employment and a letter of recommendation are needed.  Applications are in the counseling drawer.  Deadline is May 30.                 (4-10)

Justin Sharp Memorial Scholarship

This is a $2000 award for a student with a 3.25 GPA.  Academic performance, school activities, work ethic, financial need and dedication will be considered.  Applications are in the counseling drawer.  Deadline is June 1.               (4-10)

AES Engineers –

A $500 scholarship will be awarded.  You are not required to be taking engineering courses to be eligible.  Requirement is an essay to answer one of two questions:  1)  What do you consider to be the single most important problem that is facing society today?  Why? Or  2)  Why are you a good candidate to receive this award?  There is no application packet, just submit essay to scholarships@aesengineers.com .  Include your full name, your current school, and the school you will attend in 2008-9.  Submit by Sept 15, 2008.  Other information is at www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.php             (1-7)

Essay Contest

  Ayn Rand

11th-12th graders may submit essay on The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand.  Deadline is April 25.  Mrs. Holdsworth has a flyer listing the topics (pick one of the three.)  Student website:   www.aynrandnovels.com            (10-18)

Council for America’s First Freedom

Essay contest.  $3.000 prize.  Topic:  The Constitution and Religion in the classroom.  Information at www.firstfreedom.org. then Council News.  (8-29)

National Commission for Cooperative Education

Ten NCCE Partner Colleges and Universities will award one hundred-eighty five (185) merit co-op renewable scholarships of $6,000 each.  See Mrs. Holdsworth or go online for the list of the ten partner colleges/universities.  Additional information and on-line application at www.co-op.edu    (10-22)

The American Legion:  High School Oratorical Scholarship Program

State winners receive $1,500 scholarship.  National winners receive $14,000 to $18,000.  Funds may be used to attend any college or university in the United States.  For information, look on www.legion.org                               (10-22)

Young Native Writers Essay

This writing contest is designed to inspire Native American high school students to research and elaborate on historic or comtemporary issues affecting their community.  Winners receive all expense paid trips to Washington, D.C., and scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.  www.indian.hklaw.com has complete details.  Deadline is April 15, 2008.                                 (11-9)
